Terms of service

These terms are an agreement between you and Siddharth Macker, sole proprietor trading as Read Rebel, New Delhi, India ("we", "us"), the provider of Read Rebel. They cover the Read Rebel website, web app and Android app, and Rebel Plus. We've written them in plain language. Please read them together with our privacy policy and refund and cancellation policy. By using Read Rebel or buying Plus, you agree to these terms.

1. Eligibility

• You can use the free app at any age at which your local law allows you to use online services, but Read Rebel isn't directed to children under 13.
• To buy Plus or subscribe to the newsletter, you must be an adult able to form a binding contract where you live (18 in India). Otherwise, a parent or lawful guardian must agree to these terms and make or approve the purchase.

2. What Read Rebel is

Read Rebel is a reading app that opens book files you choose to import, and it stores your books, notes and progress on your device. Read Rebel doesn't sell or distribute books.

3. Your books, your content, and copyright

• Only import files you lawfully own or are allowed to read, such as DRM-free books you've bought, public-domain works, or your own documents. Read Rebel is for your personal reading. Don't use it to copy, share or distribute books you don't have rights to.
• You keep all rights to what you create in Read Rebel, such as highlights, notes, reviews and vocabulary. We don't receive it (it stays on your device), and we claim no rights to it.
• Your data lives on your device, so you're responsible for your own backups. Clearing browser data or uninstalling the app can delete it. Use Settings → Export backup to keep a copy.
• If you believe material connected with Read Rebel infringes your copyright, email hello@readrebel.app with the details, and we'll respond promptly under our notice-and-takedown process.

4. Free and Plus

The Free plan is free forever. It includes unlimited books and reading, highlights and notes, read-aloud at every speed, streaks, goals and alarms, three core themes and up to 50 vocabulary cards.

Rebel Plus unlocks extra features, which are described on our pricing section at the time you buy. We may improve or add Plus features. If we remove a major Plus feature during a pass you've paid for, you can ask for a pro-rata refund for the unused time.

7-day free trial: after onboarding, every new reader gets Plus free for 7 days, with no payment details required. When it ends, you move to Free automatically and are never charged. Plus features then lock, but nothing you created is deleted. The trial is offered once per reader.

5. Buying Plus: prepaid passes

• Plus is sold as a prepaid pass for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. The pass starts when payment is confirmed.
• No automatic renewal. When your pass ends, Plus features lock until you choose to buy another pass. We don't store a payment mandate and never charge you again without a new purchase from you. There's nothing to cancel.
• Prices include applicable taxes (such as GST or VAT) unless checkout clearly shows otherwise. The total you pay is shown before you confirm payment. We use regional pricing, so the price shown at checkout depends on your country.
• Payments in India are processed by Razorpay (UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets). International payments are processed by card through Razorpay.
• If a payment fails or is debited twice, the extra amount is refunded or reversed automatically by the payment system or on request.
• Price changes never affect a pass you've already bought.

6. Refunds and your statutory rights

• 7-day no-questions refund: ask within 7 days of purchase and we'll refund the pass in full, whatever the reason. See the refund and cancellation policy for how.
• EU and UK consumers: you normally have a 14-day right to withdraw from a digital-content contract. Because Plus unlocks immediately, at checkout we ask for your express consent to immediate access and your acknowledgement that you then lose the statutory right of withdrawal. We confirm this in your receipt. Our voluntary 7-day refund still applies.
• Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer-protection law that can't be excluded, including the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 in India and laws on digital content that doesn't work as described.

7. Your Plus licence

• When you buy a pass, we issue a digitally signed licence that unlocks Plus for the length of the pass. The licence is personal and non-transferable. You may use it on your own devices for your own non-commercial reading.
• Don't share, sell, publish, copy, modify or tamper with licences or the licence check, or unlock Plus without paying. We may revoke licences obtained or used this way, without a refund where the law allows.
• If you lose your licence (for example after changing devices), contact us with your order ID or purchase email and we'll help you restore it.

8. Acceptable use

You agree not to use Read Rebel to break the law or infringe anyone's rights, and not to:

• interfere with, overload or attack our websites, APIs, licensing or payment systems;
• get around Plus restrictions, or the security or licensing measures, except where the law expressly allows it;
• resell, rent or offer Read Rebel or Plus to others as a service without our written permission;
• use Read Rebel, our name or our logo to mislead others (for example, publishing a copy of the app under our brand).

9. Our intellectual property

The Read Rebel name and logo, the design, text, artwork, sounds and software belong to us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and trademark law. These terms give you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive licence to use Read Rebel. They don't transfer ownership of any of it. Open-source components are used under their own licences, which take precedence for those components. © 2026 Read Rebel. All rights reserved.

10. Third-party services and content

Some features rely on third parties, such as dictionaryapi.dev for definitions, Wikipedia for "Explain" (text available under CC BY-SA), your device's text-to-speech voices, Google Fonts, Vercel for hosting, and Razorpay for payments. Their terms apply to your use of them, and we aren't responsible for their availability or content.

11. Disclaimers

We work hard to make Read Rebel reliable and pleasant. Apart from the guarantees consumer law gives you, Read Rebel is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or suit every purpose. Read-aloud quality, notifications and some features depend on your device and browser. Definitions and "Explain" results come from third parties and may be incomplete or inaccurate.

12. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for loss of data stored on your device. Our total liability for any claim relating to Read Rebel is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Plus in the 12 months before the claim, or ₹1,000. These limits don't apply where the law doesn't allow them, for example liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or your non-excludable rights as a consumer in the EU, the UK, India or elsewhere.

13. Suspension and ending use

You can stop using Read Rebel at any time by uninstalling it or clearing its data. We may suspend or revoke a licence if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, and we'll tell you why where we reasonably can. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as 9, 11, 12 and 14) continue after you stop using Read Rebel.

14. Governing law and disputes

• These terms are governed by the laws of India. Subject to the points below, the courts at New Delhi, India have jurisdiction.
• If you're a consumer outside India, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings in your local courts where that law allows.
• Please contact us first. Most problems can be solved by email. Indian consumers can also use the National Consumer Helpline or consumer commissions. EU consumers can use their national consumer bodies and approved alternative dispute resolution schemes.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when cloud sync launches. We'll change the effective date above and, for material changes, tell you in the app, on the website, or by email if you've given it to us. The terms in force when you bought a pass continue to apply to that pass.
